What is Medical Cannabis in Washington?

While cannabis is legally available for recreational use by adults 21 and older, Washington State maintains a dedicated Medical Cannabis Program for patients of any age who have specific, debilitating health conditions. The medical program is designed to provide qualifying patients with legal protections, financial relief through tax exemptions, and access to the necessary quantities of cannabis required to manage their symptoms.

Who Qualifies for Medical Cannabis?

To qualify, you must be a resident of Washington State and have a diagnosis from an eligible healthcare practitioner for a terminal or debilitating medical condition. A condition is considered debilitating if it is severe enough to significantly interfere with your activities of daily living.

The Washington State medical cannabis program recognizes the following qualifying conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
  • Glaucoma (acute or chronic with increased intraocular pressure unrelieved by standard treatments)
  • Crohn’s disease with debilitating symptoms unresponsive to standard treatments
  • Hepatitis C presenting with debilitating nausea or intractable pain
  • Intractable pain (pain unrelieved by conventional treatment)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis
  • Diseases (including anorexia) resulting in nausea, vomiting, wasting, appetite loss, cramping, seizures, muscle spasms, or spasticity that are unresponsive to standard therapies

Note: This is an outline of qualifying conditions currently recognized through publication but other conditions may apply. Ultimately, your healthcare practitioner holds the final discretion in determining if your condition meets the state’s criteria for a medical cannabis authorization.

How It Works: Getting Your Recognition Card

Getting your Washington State Medical Cannabis Recognition Card is a simple, two-step process:

  1. Get Authorized: Visit your healthcare practitioner (MD, DO, PA, OPA, ND, or ARNP). If they determine medical cannabis is appropriate for your condition, they will provide you with a completed, signed Medical Cannabis Authorization Form printed on tamper-resistant paper.

  2. Visit Our Store: Bring your valid, state-issued photo ID and your Authorization Form to our dispensary during our walk-in medical consult hours. For the fastest service, please call in and make an appointment in advance. Upon arrival, ask to speak with our Certified Medical Cannabis Consultant. They will enter your information into the state’s Medical Cannabis Registry and print your active Recognition Card right here in the store.

What You Get as a Registered Patient

Entering the state’s voluntary Medical Cannabis Registry and holding a valid Recognition Card unlocks significant benefits that are not available to recreational consumers:

  • Tax Relief: Registered patients with a Recognition Card receive exemptions from both the 37% cannabis excise tax and 8.5% (as of July 2026) in state and local sales taxes, making your medical cannabis more affordable.

  • Higher Possession Limits: Registered patients can legally purchase and possess up to 3 ounces of usable cannabis (flower), 48 ounces of solid cannabis-infused edibles, 216 ounces of liquid infused products, and 21 grams of cannabis concentrates.

  • Home Cultivation: Patients with a card may grow up to 6 plants for personal medical use (and possess up to 8 ounces of usable cannabis from those plants). If recommended by your healthcare practitioner, you may be authorized to grow up to 15 plants (yielding up to 16 ounces).

  • Access to Clones & Seeds: You gain the legal ability to purchase immature plants, clones, and seeds from licensed producers to grow at home.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Do I need a doctor’s recommendation for medical cannabis in Washington?
A: Yes. You must obtain a medical cannabis authorization from an eligible healthcare practitioner (such as an MD, DO, ND, or ARNP) with whom you have an established patient-practitioner relationship.

Q: Can minors qualify for a medical cannabis card?
A: Yes. Washington State issues medical cannabis cards to minors diagnosed with a qualifying condition, provided they have a valid authorization form and the consent of a parent or legal guardian. Patients under 18 must have a designated provider (DP) entered into the registry.

Q: What happens if I have an authorization form but don’t get the registry card?
A: If you choose not to be entered into the state’s voluntary Medical Cannabis Registry, you will only be allowed to purchase the standard recreational amounts. Furthermore, your home grow limit is restricted to only 4 plants (and 6 ounces of usable cannabis from those plants), and you will not receive the tax exemptions.

Q: Are all cannabis products sold in Washington dispensaries qualified?
A: No. Many products will qualify but it is up to the products’ original manufacturer to apply for the additional testing or choose to be only available for adult recreational use. Our consultant can help you find any DOH compliant products or look for the DOH Compliant Sticker on qualifying cannabis packaging.

Q: Can I get an authorization form directly from the dispensary?
A: No. A dispensary and its consultants cannot authorize patients or issue the initial medical authorization form. You must bring a completed form from your healthcare practitioner before our consultant can generate your card.

Q: Can you accept Medical Patient Cards from other states or countries?
A: No. Legally to qualify you must hold a current Washington State Medical Cannabis Patient Card. We do offer a 10% discount to anyone that can demonstrate a current medical card but does not qualify for Washington State discounts.

Q: Can medical cannabis be purchased at any time the store is open?
A: No. To remain compliant with the state rules, we can only offer Medical Cannabis sales while our Medical Cannabis Consultant is on site to assist you. For updated hours of availability please click here.
